NOTICE!! Access to this trail from the Virginia side has been posted with “No Trespassing” signs. Some assholes decided it’d be a great idea to steal from the land owner! Thanks for ruining it for all of us.
A friend here in town introduced me to this hike. It’s an old wagon trail that was created to get from Hubbard Springs, VA to Cranks, KY with the “hole” having been blasted through the rocky ledge and with great vistas from on top.
It’s 4 miles round trip with an elevation gain of about 1,000 feet.
There’s not a lot of information about this trail available online unfortunately. It’s a hike I’ve done multiple times and it’s great because it’s only about 15-20 minutes from my house. I just wish people would stop spray painting stuff on the rocks.

Hi. Thanks for your post about Hole in the Wall. My Grandmother grew up in Hubbard Springs in the early 1900s. I made my 1st visit there yesterday and would love to go back and do this hike. I live in Kingsport TN and have hiked to the Sand Cave and all over East TN, Southwest VA & Eastern KY. Do you know who I should contact to get permission? Thanks so much!
Hi Mike,
Unfortunately, I don’t know who you’d need to get permission from – I haven’t tried. I’m assuming that it’s owned by the farm that’s to the right of the entrance so maybe just a knock on their door? Sorry I don’t have a better answer.
